This hatchling appears to be... dead?

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

No one is certain how, but an accident had occurred that involved an egg falling from a high distance and breaking apart ahead of its time. A search had ensued, and the egg's relatives were in dismay as they hoped to find the hatchling still alive. Only a still-young Magma was able to find the shattered pieces of the shell in a small crack on the bottom of the mountain . . . and a wailing, broken hatchling with two red marks on its neck. The hatchling had survived, but with horrible consequences.

Every day of its ungendered existence, Always In Pain has lived in severe pain. It is often seen either writhing uncontrollably from the sheer agony, or lying silent and still on the ground--only to wake again later and cry despairingly. Only the blood of other dragons keeps it alive, even seeming to please it ever so slightly.
