And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

As is typical of his breed, Owlpaw's call is more similar to that of an owl rather than a growl or a roar like most other kinds of dragon. Owlpaw has refined this mimicry to an art, and can imitate not only the cries of owls, but also the calls of some other birds of prey, and even a few songbirds. This technique is how he hunts, using the distress signal or mating calls of whatever he's stalking at the time to lure it closer to him so he can pounce upon it.
