When Water Dragons mature, they lose the ability to survive on land, entering the water permanently. They are adept swimmers and eat whatever fish are in the lake they live in. They tend to inhabit the same lake for their entire lives, although a few live in the ocean and swim all over the world.

With a brave, if disgusted, face he had slithered through the obstructions lining the street. But it turned out that he was sticky as well as abrasive and as he passed the build-up stuck to his slimy scales, flattened down his salmon pink frills, and followed him all the way to Mom's house. Ever since that day when he was forced to stay outside Mom's lake until he had been hosed down and disinfected Liquid Plumber has had a grudge against humans, but fears them too.
