Dragons are creatures with nearly unlimited life spans. They can survive for long periods of time, and no one has found a dragon that has died of old age. Adolescence is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling's wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Once they hit adolescence, hatchlings change quickly, maturing to their full forms in only 2 years.

Dragons don't communicate with each other verbally, but they will growl to scare off predators and frighten prey. Young dragons will emit an extremely high-pitched squeal when they are frightened. To communicate, they use telepathy with each other and to speak to other creatures.

Gray dragons are the masters of the skies. They are excellent fliers and land only to rest and eat. In addition, they have full control of the weather. They are very hot-tempered and easily angered. They will attack any human that bothers them, conjuring strong winds and dangerous lightning.

On a rainy night, a wingless hatchling was abandoned at the entrance of the dragon cave. Lica, who was in the cave to collect her first dragon eggs, saw the little hatchling asleep near the entrance. The creature appeared to be alone. Lica felt compassion for it, and decided to take it to her own cave. She wasn't sure what species the dragon was (she was a rookie breeder), she thought it was a black dragon, so she named it: Sombra de la noche (Shadow of the night). Sombra grew up alongside Amatista , Alizar and Arcangel (Lica's first eggs). They used to play together all the time, Sombra was like the big brother of all the other hatchlings and became the leader of the group, they followed him everywhere. He was the first one who grew his wings, soon he didn't seem to enjoy playing in the cave, he would rather fly away to spent time alone, but never too far from the cave. He was the first dragon of the clan to reach adulthood. As expected, Sombra was elected the Leader of the clan.
