Dragons are creatures with nearly unlimited life spans. They can survive for long periods of time, and no one has found a dragon that has died of old age. Adolescence is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling's wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Once they hit adolescence, hatchlings change quickly, maturing to their full forms in only 2 years.

Dragons don't communicate with each other verbally, but they will growl to scare off predators and frighten prey. Young dragons will emit an extremely high-pitched squeal when they are frightened. To communicate, they use telepathy with each other and to speak to other creatures.

Black dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

As a hatchling, Xeelos was not liked among the members of her parents clan. Later she was chased off and forced to live alone for most of her years. She had grown to not trust those outside of her breed, until she met a young black dragon named Tasselhoff Burrfoot. The hyperactive dragon brought her to other lone dragons who soon joined them. Soon she found herself as the leader of her own clan. She is strong and will not back down or run from danger, despite starting to slow down due to age. She is also barren so she cannot have children, but she pushes this thought to the back of her head and ignores it most of the time, but it sometimes hurts her on the inside that there will be no one to carry on her legacy when the day comes for her to go to the next world. Currently her greatest fear is that Darkness-the-curse, a young female Sunset, will try to challenge her and take her place as leader.  But for now, she still stands tall as the clan's leader, and plans to stay that way.
