Young dragons are relatively defenseless. Their scales don't grow in until right before they mature, and they have almost no strength. Once a hatchling's wings grow in, it marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are usually left alone by their mother and begin to hunt and survive on their own.

Tullio is the strongest and largest of the Rain Clan's hatchling spies. He's their fighter and their defender, and works with Cadmium's magic skills to protect his friends. His foster mother, Thorn, has taught him how to use his vines and thorns to defend himself, and his foster father, Emerald, has taught him how to use his teeth and claws for the same reasons. He often fights with the other male hatchlings, but loves the little purple healer, Pansy.
