Dragons are creatures with nearly unlimited life spans. They can survive for long periods of time, and no one has found a dragon that has died of old age. Adolescence is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling's wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Once they hit adolescence, hatchlings change quickly, maturing to their full forms in only 2 years.
Dragons don't communicate with each other verbally, but they will growl to scare off predators and frighten prey. Young dragons will emit an extremely high-pitched squeal when they are frightened. To communicate, they use telepathy with each other and to speak to other creatures.
Gray dragons are the masters of the skies. They are excellent fliers and land only to rest and eat. In addition, they have full control of the weather. They are very hot-tempered and easily angered. They will attack any human that bothers them, conjuring strong winds and dangerous lightning.
The trading fleet from out of Drekanos had been driven before the storm for days. The captain shouted orders to his frantic crew, struggling to be heard over the screaming wind and roaring thunder. A circle of Priest-Mages crouched on deck, their faces white and strained as they fought to hold failing spells. In the thick storm clouds above a twisting, sinuous grey form could occasionally be glimpsed. Days before, Drekanos and the heart of the great spell-net had been shattered, and now the dragon who had been bound to ensure their smooth sailing was driving the ships to their doom. Drekanos' final fleet were not the last ships Tryphon broke on the sea. The trade of a thousand countries has been changed since near permanent storms closed the straits of Drekan. Many of those wrecks decorated the watery nursery of Nicephorus, the first hatchling to be born free in Drekanos. He, and every other hatchling born in Drekanos since, has Tryphon wrapped around their little claws - and know it!
