Aww... It's a cute baby dragon. Except for the occasional flicker of movement, it remains inanimate.
And look! It's grown its wings! It must be close to maturing.
Young dragons are relatively defenseless. Their scales don't grow in until right before they mature, and they have almost no strength. Once a hatchling's wings grow in, it marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are usually left alone by their mother and begin to hunt and survive on their own.
Princess Pebbles is destined to remain a hatchling for the rest of her life, due to an unfortunate accident shortly after she emerged for her egg, where an adult Stone Dragon failed to notice her while on his centennial trip to the top of the mountain. Crushed and battered from this accidental collision, she managed to cling to life, but her growth will be permanently stunted. Gabrielle has assisted her in the latter stages of recovery, but even the White Dragon was amazed when she grew wings.
