Vampire dragons are members of the undead. They sustain themselves by drinking the blood of others. It is said that they are only "alive" at night, and seem dead or asleep during the day, as they cannot endure sunlight for long periods of time. Vampire dragons can only reproduce by changing the eggs of other dragons, puncturing the shell with theirs fangs and injecting a venom that kills the baby inside.

Maraeva is headstrong, impulsive and aggressive. She is, however, fiercely loyal to Makenna the Undead pack. In a way, she is a weapon of flesh and blood, always spoiling for a fight and straining against the very tight leash she is kept on. Makenna knows that she must hold her back or risk a war with the living - a war Maraeva would quite happily initiate if given half the chance. In a sense, Maraeva is very young despite her years because she has never learnt temperance or restraint. She talks tough and lives tougher; woe betide those who dare to cross her because she rarely gives first chances, let alone second ones.
