Dragons are creatures with nearly unlimited life spans. They can survive for long periods of time, and no one has found a dragon that has died of old age. Hatchlings spend a relatively long period of time as hatchlings, from 100 to 200 years, before they mature. Adolescence is usually marked by a hatchling's wings growing in, but not all breeds of dragons grow wings. Baby dragons all look very similar, but once they hit adolescence, they change very fast, they mature to their full forms in only 2 years.

Dragons don't communicate with each other verbally, but they will growl to scare off predators and frighten prey. Young dragons will emit an extremely high-pitched squeal when they are frightened. To communicate, they use telepathy with each other and to speak to other creatures.

Mint colored dragons are the most peaceful of all dragons; they only eat plants unless they scavenge meat from an already dead animal. They also have no ways to attack others or defend themselves. They are much smaller than other forms of dragons, since they only double in size when they mature. Mint dragons are unable to use magic, and cannot fly since they don't have wings. Their looks have given rise to the common insult of calling dragons "large lizards."

Joe DiMaggio was the smallest of his crop of stolen hatchlings, and he was adopted.  These factors, on top of the fact that he is a Mint, have led to him being quite shy and depressed.  His self-esteem was greatly boosted, however, when Arianna, a Pink dragon, began warming up to him, and the two became fast friends.  Arianna was once the only dragon in the cave whom Joe did not fear, but now he counts most of them as family.  Now that Joe has some seniority in the cave, his anxiety has gone down even more.
