Young dragons are relatively defenseless. Their scales don't grow in until right before they mature, and they have almost no strength. Once a hatchling's wings grow in, it marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are usually left alone by their mother and begin to hunt and survive on their own.

Isodor Autumn is not the child of Kyro and Ashara Autumn, but the child of Ashara's sister Gwinni Greenleaf, a seasonal dragon that was born in the summer. However, since the characters of mother and son where as different as summer and fall, his mother agreed with her son growing up with his aunt and uncle. Isodor visits his mother often, but their characters often cause uncomfortable silences: where Gwinni loves the sun, sitting in it and talking about warmth and green valleys, Isodor rather spends his time looking at the falling leaves, breathing in the smell of wet leaves and feeling the rain touch his skin, just like is aunt and uncle.
