Aww... It's a cute baby dragon. It has a large, shield-like object at the end of its tail that it uses for protection.
And look! It's grown its wings! It must be close to maturing.
Young dragons are relatively defenseless. Their scales don't grow in until right before they mature, and they have almost no strength. Once a hatchling's wings grow in, it marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are usually left alone by their mother and begin to hunt and survive on their own.
Chikchai Shugorei means "tiny guardian spirit." Shugorei (or "Rei," as the other hatchlings call her) is a young dragon of small stature but great determination. She started life at a disadvantage, abandoned as an egg and frequently sick as a hatchling. However, she gradually built up a wiry toughness and although she will never be large, she is a very capable little dragon. She once rescued Gyakuten from the ensnaring vines of the clearing plant dragons that he'd mistakenly stumbled upon. Since then, the two have formed a fast friendship verging on infatuation. At those times when Shugorei sneaks away from the group, it can be almost guaranteed that she is in Gyakuten's company.
