Dragons are creatures with nearly unlimited life spans. They can survive for long periods of time, and no one has found a dragon that has died of old age. Adolescence is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling's wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Once they hit adolescence, hatchlings change quickly, maturing to their full forms in only 2 years.

Dragons don't communicate with each other verbally, but they will growl to scare off predators and frighten prey. Young dragons will emit an extremely high-pitched squeal when they are frightened. To communicate, they use telepathy with each other and to speak to other creatures.

Moonstone dragons are named after the orb on their tails, which resembles the gem of the same name. They are nocturnal and gather energy through the absorption of moonlight with their orbs. They seem to glow in with a lunar light and are a very gentle breed, feeding off of plants and the moon's power.

Allex and her best friend Ashamun have always enjoyed playing in the lava pools and the spring fountains near their home. Though they are complete opposites, one loving the hot burning shelters of volcanoes and the other enjoying cool fresh waterfalls, they spend equal time doing what the other wants. Both were abandoned as eggs and went through many traumatizing experiences, almost cracking their shells, they were never separated. It was as if a piece of thread tied them together. But, one day, Ashamun went out to a lava pool to have a quick bath and never came back. Allex went out to look for her and only found the glowing red stone symbolizing their friendship. Allex also had one, though the color was blue. She searched all over for her dear friend, leaving her comfortable life and risking it to find Ashamun. After two long year, Allex was almost done hoping; until a mysterious feather fell from the sky. The feather was red and very soft.
