It was previously believed that purple dragons were exclusively female, but this is not the case. Recent environmental shifts have revealed the existence of both genders of this breed. Female behavior is well known; they are primarily herbivores but will eat meat during mating season. On the other hand, very little is known about the behavior and habits of male purple dragons.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Porthos II is a purple dragon. A sort of a joker, he admires his adopted brother, Pollux IV, and he is one of the 'prankster trio': Pollux IV, Paragon II, and himself. Although he usually doesn't get any big part in Pollux IV's entertaining performances and pranks, he does enjoy jumping out of trees to scare his clan's hunting dragons or changing directional markings on the trunks of trees to fool them into going the wrong way (he always leads them back to the clan's camp after having a good laugh). Although his jokes are sometimes annoying and the more serious dragons of his clan despise him and the other 2 pranksters, his jokes are never malicious or harmful, and he always tries to make sure that everyone, even the dragon he pranked, gets to have fun.
