Dragons are creatures with nearly unlimited life spans. They can survive for long periods of time, and no one has found a dragon that has died of old age. Adolescence is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Once they hit adolescence, hatchlings change quickly, maturing to their full forms in only 2 years.
Dragons don’t communicate with each other verbally, but they will growl to scare off predators and frighten prey. Young dragons will emit an extremely high-pitched squeal when they are frightened. To communicate, they use telepathy with each other and to speak to other creatures.
Sunset dragons are closely related to sunrise dragons. However, their behaviors differ greatly. Sunset dragons generally live alone or in small packs. They are more active in the evening, hunting and performing all of their daily tasks as the sun sets.
Fakaino's egg was stolen at the hour it was laid. His parents were absent from the nest, and the little egg was taken hungrily by another dragon. This dragon, however, was killed in a sneak attack from another Sunset Dragon like Fakaino (he named himself). Fakaino was abandoned and hatched on his own, alone. He managed to survive on dead dragons' carcasses, which were fortunately all around his birthing place. But his adult ages were terrible. Dragons, clans of dragons, feared that Fakaino was a spy out to murder them, so three clans in all formed a group to hunt him down. When they finally caught him, Fakaino tried his best to fight. A pebble dragon tore his right horn off. Fakaino stopped fighting and tried to run off. He was saved by an Uncita clan dragon, who killed the pebble. The Uncitas welcomed Fakaino as one of their own, but the clans threatened to slaughter them if they didn't discard some of their own members. So three dragons were killed, and another three were exiled.
