Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Ihao got the adjective "Varied" because of what happened during the magical spell that froze him. Each time Flammole tried to say the spell, he mispronounced the magical words for it. Usually it was harmless, but one of the ways he pronounced the words made the words for "stop" and "age" become "random" and "size". Flammole, thinking that it worked, gave up for the day, but was surprised to see that Ihao had grown a bit the next morning. Finally, he said the words correctly to freeze Ihao, but was unable to reverse the "random size" spell. Now, Ihao is found with a different size each day, ranging anywhere from half the size of a Pygmy Hatchling to twice the size of a full grown Terrae Dragon. Once, a small unnamed hatchling climbed into his mouth during his largest form, and was never heard of again. The dragons suspect that when Ihao changed into his smallest form, the hatchling changed with him and became too small to see. Ihao has no memory of this night.
