Cheese Dragons are not actually alive. They are enchanted items of food that act almost identically to dragons. They have no need to eat, but they must “live” in humid environments or they will dry out and harden.

Ostqueijo's egg arrived at the cave as a gift. Many dragons thought it was a snack, but since he wasn't the first cheese dragon around, everyone was forbidden to eat it, bite it or try to cook cheese fondue. Kanrost, the other cheese dragon, was in charge of the egg until the hatchling broke the soft shell, proving that it really wasn't food. Ostqueijo soon learned how to yell loud enough to call an adult if someone tried to snack on him, and was fast enough to hide under rocks or in small holes until help arrived. When he became an adult, he learned to defend himself from other hungry dragons, and now no one tries to eat him if they don't want to be slashed. Some learned the hard way that claws made of cheese can still be pretty sharp.
