Seasonal Dragons take on the characteristics of the season during which they are born. Thus, eggs that are laid in spring match the pink flowers and green buds of spring, and those that are laid in the summer grow to depict the bright green of the forest trees and the yellow of the sun. Eggs laid in autumn display the bright colors of leaves falling from trees, and those that are laid during winter take on the appearance of the icy snow.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Arvyle is an adventurer through and through. He returns from one journey, and it is less than a month before he catches wind of another far-away mystery and takes off again, much to the apparent exasperation of his beloved, the gray Metar. His tale began even before he was born, back when his parents tended a nest of brightly-colored eggs. They had chosen a volcanic cavern as their den, and one day a tremor shook the nest, causing Arvyle's egg to roll out and down the tunnels. It came to rest near a hot spring, where the warm vapor kept the egg from cooling. Arvyle hatched soundly, but alone. Feeding on the rats and lichens that thrived in the darkness, Arvyle spent a full week exploring the caves by lava light, before finally astonishing his parents, who had thought the egg gone beyond recall, with his appearance. He was born right into an adventure fraught with peril, and can think of no better way to spend his life than with the thrill of danger around every corner.
