Ridgewing Dragons live just below the snow level on the upper slopes of mountains. They are a friendly, playful breed and enjoy dancing in wind currents near their homes or plummeting down into valleys from great heights. Their wings, by far their most striking feature, grow in fin-like ridges along their backs. While their bodies lack markings to blend better with their surroundings, a ridgewing’s wings have bright markings in the colors of the flowers that grow in their mountain habitat. Occasionally different-colored individuals can be found, but they are rare because their striking coloring offers little protection.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Kaito was brought to the cave as an egg, just one of many Ridgewing eggs. One by one the eggs hatched and Kaito spent a short time playing with the other hatchlings. But as the older hatchlings grew and were discovered to be female they were taken away. He thought for sure he would be taken away as well. But when he was old enough for his wings to grow more and he was found to be male all the younger hatchlings and eggs were taken away and he was put among the cave's other hatchlings and given the name of Nightwing. As he grew he learned the reason for these strange happenings, he was destined to become the patriarch of a great dragon lineage. He never much concerned himself with his "destiny" when he was young, he was much too busy admiring the stars in the night sky. That is, until a Nebula dragon paid the cave a visit. Kaito was awestruck by the starry patterns on the Nebula's body. Now he spends all his time searching for a Nebula egg that will hatch into a female for him to court.
