Vampire Dragons are members of the undead. They sustain themselves by drinking the blood of others. It is said that they are only “alive” at night, and seem dead or asleep during the day, as they cannot endure sunlight for long periods of time. Vampire Dragons can only reproduce by changing the eggs of other dragons, puncturing the shell with their fangs and injecting venom that kills the baby inside.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Hadek Nightbane is a very deadly vampire—ruthless, bloodthirsty, and extremely calculating and clever.  When he sees an egg he wishes to turn, he will wait for weeks, if necessary, until the right moment presents itself for him to strike.  Hadek has plans to build up a vast vampire army, all bearing the surname Nightbane, in order to infiltrate and take over as many dragon communities as possible.  Many adult vampires have wanted to align themselves with Hadek, but he only wants followers he has personally raised from an egg, to ensure loyalty.  As a result, Hadek's army has remained small—the eggs he turns tend to grow into adults very much like him, with no interest in taking orders from him, and so they leave.  Hadek attempts to learn something from each failure, though, and so his vampire army is slowly starting to increase.
