Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Buttercup is tiny, even by Pygmy standards. She was frozen before her gender became clear, but she identifies as female. She keeps to herself mostly, and rides around on Minya's head whenever she can, the adult Pygmy keeping her safe from larger dragons who might hurt her by mistake. Minya mothers her even though they aren't related. Buttercup loves to snuggle up with Minya, cute and cozy.
