And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Although Gnau is only the size of a normal dragon's claw, he has a way of making himself noticed: by nipping. Many of the dragons in his cave don't realize it is actually a pygmy hatchling that keeps them awake constantly at night with its minuscule teeth, but the other pygmies know. Gilfye does her best to contain him at night by putting him through tiring exercises during the day, but Gnau seems to have boundless energy.
