Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Mortimer is quiet and somewhat moody; as a hatchling he ran afoul of a wild Vampire dragon whose bite nearly killed him. Fortunately, Henry Townshend was more than willing to aid the youngster and healed his grave wound almost instantly. Poor Mortimer still has the two deep gouges in his neck to this day, though the scars have faded slightly. He feels as though he owes Townshend his life, and surprisingly contrasting with his personality, he is more than happy to honor his savior with a gift of gems and food every so often. Oddly enough, Henry has never asked for tribute. Mortimer refuses to take no for an answer, so Henry always accepts the tribute with a thankful smile.
