Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Its eyes glow brightly at night, and it enjoys attacking insects and small animals.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Midnight Petal is a black hatchling. She is very small compared to the other hatchlings of the clan, but she is infinitely smarter and more mature, despite her young and child-like body. As a young dragon, she loved to learn about anything and everything she could get her hands on, and soon, she became many dragons' "favorite hatchling." They loved her eager questions and curious attitude and were more than glad to provide answers to them, and her knowledge grew and grew. However, when she learned that she would become an adult and would have to help her clan hunt and patrol the territory (which would cut into her 'valuable' and 'priceless' learning time), she became so sad and sullen that Merlin's Shadow, her mentor and magi dragon, cast a spell on her that prevented her from growing. Since then, she has made it her mission to teach as much to as many hatchlings as possible, so that they are prepared to be an adult when they mature.
