It was previously believed that purple dragons were exclusively female, but this is not the case. Recent environmental shifts have revealed the existence of both genders of this breed. Female behavior is well known; they are primarily herbivores but will eat meat during mating season. On the other hand, very little is known about the behavior and habits of male purple dragons.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Janthina's wings barely have the strength to keep her aloft for long flights, and her body is too frail for fighting or toil. Despite that, she wants to do her best and has elected to become The Flight's record-keeper, going to each dragon and taking note of their lives in her books. Since The Flight's members are scattered from the edge of the sky to the depths of the sea, her efforts frequently push her strength to its limit. She still tries, often pushing herself to the point of collapse in her effort to not be slowed by her body.

She's not alone in her efforts, though. Jet Black Dorkface noticed her struggles and now offers his assistance for her more arduous work, supplying her with a shoulder to lean on for long flights. She tries not to rely on him too much, and maybe it's because of that they've become close, close enough that he's her secret fantasy. But every time she tries to tell him, something (usually Hasijna) interrupts, and so her heart remains an unopened book.
