Young drakes are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own.

Eo was an extremely foolish hatchling. She was always bothering the other dragons and trying to breathe fire on them. Whisperer knew that when Eo grew up, she would be much more destructive. She asked Eo if she would like to stay a hatchling forever, but Eo said, "No! Hatchlings are too incapable of doing extremely aggravating things, like breathing fire." But Whisperer was not deterred. While Eo was asleep, she froze the hatchling. Of course, when she woke up, Eo didn't notice anything different. But the next day, the day she was supposed to grow up on, when she didn't grow up, Eo knew what Whisperer did. She ran, yelling, to the enchantress. "What did you do!" She yelled. Eventually she got used to being a hatchling, but she still has not forgiven Whisperer.
