Dragons are creatures with nearly unlimited life spans. They can survive for long periods of time, and no one has found a dragon that has died of old age. Adolescence is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling's wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Once they hit adolescence, hatchlings change quickly, maturing to their full forms in only 2 years.
Dragons don't communicate with each other verbally, but they will growl to scare off predators and frighten prey. Young dragons will emit an extremely high-pitched squeal when they are frightened. To communicate, they use telepathy with each other and to speak to other creatures.
Red dragons are similar to typical story book dragons. They shoot flames, can fly, etc. However, they aren't evil creatures as depicted in myths and won't go around raiding castles, killing knights, or kidnapping princesses. They live in a variety of habitats, from forests to coastlines to abandoned castles, usually in warm climates, and eat whatever living creatures they can find.
Diablorojo was named by the villagers near where he was born. He wandered into town as a hatchling and was adopted as kind of a pet. At first he was cute, and they happily fed him livestock. He got larger and larger. At full size he was an effective deterrent to bandit raids and tax collector visits, so he became a permanent fixture. He was regarded as mostly harmless, until he accidentally ate a baby. It wasn't his fault, the baby was left unattended very close to where he was customarily fed, and it was squealing (and really, it did kind of look like a pig). The villagers reacted badly. Diablorojo tried to explain that he didn't mean to eat the baby, he thought it was a pig, but he was so upset by the whole mix-up that he started coughing, and accidentally burned down the mayor's house. He then decided it might be time to leave home. After the last visit from the tax collector, the villagers have begun to think they might have been a bit hasty in encouraging him to leave.
