Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Frostflake—like all small hatchlings—loves playing outside, especially in the snow. But since he's still very small in size, he is not yet very good at keeping up his own core body temperature. And since he is far too easily distracted by having fun to actually notice when he is growing too cold, he needs to be constantly watched by his parents or older hatchlings. Frostflake usually pouts for a while when one of those party poopers kills his fun but once he's warm and cozy he will quickly forgive and forget while snuggling close to his mummy until she allows him to go out again.
