Gold dragons are the ones most often killed by humans, who consider their scales to be extremely valuable. These golden scales grant them a high level of protection, similar to armor, and they use this to their advantage in battle.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Maizokin is mentally deficient, having come from an inbred line. Though she had eggs of her own, the other dragons she lived with were afraid that they would struggle in life just as she did, and that she would be an inadequate mother. So they stole her eggs and abandoned them in the wild, hoping they would perish. Every time Maizokin awoke with her eggs missing she would be sad, though soon would return to normal as if nothing had happened. However, two of the eggs were spared by the mistress and Maizokin was allowed to raise them. She showed such tenderness and devotion that the other dragons were amazed. It was soon after that she took up her spot by the entrance to the cave, and took the hatchlings and eggs the mistress brought, and the eggs of the other dragons, under her wings, to hatch and raise until they grew out of her care. Maizokin couldn't be happier.
