Spirit Ward Dragons are a special breed that ward off evil spirits—at least, that’s what the legends say. During nighttime festivals, people love to see these dragons, because they believe that the dragons guard against evil spirits. The dragons are dark-colored, but glow with a flame-colored internal light that has an intensity that they control.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Erasmus Vincent glows for one reason, and one reason only: for his beloved Lenore Price who has fled to another part of EG's Cave with a secret lover. He pines for her love day in and day out, and he glows brighter than any other Spirit Ward in EG's Cave. He sends telepathic messages to her daily begging for her return.

In his depression and despair, he has taken on multiple "imaginary friends", one being a lonely old raven. The raven offers empty advice and condolences as Erasmus's mind attempts to make light of his situation. His raven friend only slightly relieves the loneliness brought on by Lenore's departure. He wishes to see her beautiful face once more, but he knows deep in his heart that he shall see her nevermore.
