Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Acfia loves to read, a unique interest among the dragons in her clan. Instead of seeking knowledge for themselves, they speak to Googol, a wise frozen hatchling, in the hope that he will answer their questions and solve their problems for them. Acfia is disgusted by their behavior, but even more disgusted at the fact that Googol chooses to allow it, not even suggesting that they learn a bit about the world themselves. And since Googol knows the answer to most every question the dragons ask, there is no need for books in her clan, leaving Acfia no reading material in the cave. Thus, Acfia banished herself to the home of Dewsong the human, her being the only other creature in the clan with a thirst for knowledge like Acfia's own.
