Dorsal Dragons are so named because they have large fins along their backs that can be raised and lowered at will. They use these fins to regulate body temperature; they raise them to cool off when they become overheated. The bright colors on the fins double as a means of attracting mates.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Callidor stands proud at the edge of the desert, remembering, from her hatchlinghood, the first day she saw the trading caravan sweeping its way across the sand dunes. Dragons laden with silver, gold, and jewels soared high and mighty amongst the wispy clouds, while the flightless marched with their caskets of rare herbs, exquisite cloth, pungent spices, semiprecious stones, and exotic woods. That day, Callidor vowed to one day march with the trading caravan on the Desert Silver Highway. Now, she has come of age, her dream realized. She stands at the edge of the desert, remembers for one last moment, and begins her steady march across the dunes alongside a thousand other dragons on the sand, and a thousand more in the air, bringing wealth and prosperity to the entire continent.
