Balloon Dragons are so named because they are filled with a gas that makes them almost lighter than air, similar to balloons. However, they are not prone to bursting, as they are covered in tough skin and can deflate themselves if necessary. In addition, they generally are slow moving. They use their gas bladders to float to the tops of trees, where food is more abundant. They can shift their weight from their backs to their fronts, allowing them to reach leaves and fruit.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Globo de Manzana is crazy for apples, as some of his fellow cave members say. Every day, all the vegetarians of the cave would happily munch on the delicious fruit of a nearby apple orchard until he hatched into the world. One day, his owner found him as an abandoned and neglected egg, floating among the trees of the orchard. The human, despite all the complaints of the Neotropical dragons, kept it. Despite the efforts of Rosa Mia and the other pink dragons to keep the egg safe, it would mysteriously disappear from the cave each night, only to be found in the orchard the next day. Fortunately for Globo de Manzana, he was not killed on any of these nights and survived into adulthood. Now, the orchard that had been bursting with fruit is now barren of any apples because Globo de Manzana has been eating them all. Many of the dragons believe he looks very fat because of this.
