Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

The Unbloomer--carrying a deadly power of which it had been cursed with, as whatever it touches will whither and die. It never wished for any harm to be done to those of its cave, yet the moment the cave elders saw its malicious abilities, they cast a spell on it to keep its power at bay. Icarias and Twilitian, the parents of the hatchling and the cave's two most respected dragons, had reluctantly agreed to this action, yet time passed and The Unbloomer's power grew stronger still. So then, at the depth of night, the elders got together and locked the poor hatchling away deep within the darkest cavern of the cave, never telling a soul about their malicious deed. And as much as Twilitian and Icarias would cry and weep for her hatchling, the poor Unbloomer will never be seen ever again, nor will it ever be freed from its prison deep underneath the earth. And with the curse of immortality placed upon it, the only friend it will ever have is eternity--no matter how cruel it may be.
