Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It has bright blue eyes, and is as clumsy as any other hatchling, but it never seems to get injured.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Das Weiss Draconis was never certain when his parents found time to create him. His father rarely left the cave, preferring to accomplish his research in his lofty chambers. His mother rarely left her valley, and whenever she entered the cave, he noticed the elders sniggering and muttering "blobbity-thing" to themselves. While he was fairly certain they weren't referring to his mother as a blobbity-thing—after all, he was told he was the spitting image of his mother, and they didn't call him blobbity-thing—he was pretty sure that was why she stayed away. Rather than worry too much about his parents' relationship, he preferred to stalk the caves with the other young hatchlings. He had to brush up on his fighting skills, as he knew it was his destiny to lead the warriors. Why else would he have such strong healing talents, after all.
