Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Mataa loves to decorate using plants, and keeps a small garden to himself for sprigs of "calling card" flowers that he carries with him whenever he goes off gadding with the clans that live nearby. A shameless flirt, his charismatic behavior has made him the object of curiosity for a substantial number of female dragons, who like to puzzle over the flowers he gives to party guests. According to rumor and gossip, Mataa passes out flowers to individuals who catch his eye, but only one kind of flower means he's smitten. No one knows if he's ever handed that one out yet, let alone which flower it even is.
