Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Prize dragons are often admired for their beauty, but this female is also valuable for an entirely different reason. Possessing an impeccable sense of direction, she's fond of tagging along behind sailing ships, always ready to guide them home again if they get lost. And, indeed, they do inevitably get lost--she has an almost uncanny ability to know beforehand which ships will sail off-course and which won't. It's for this very reason that her presence is something of a hindrance to ship captains; while she's a guarantee that they won't get lost, many of the sailors will refuse to depart in the first place, swearing that her arrival is a sure sign things will go amiss at sea!
