Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

The first tinsel in the clan, Mercer had ample opportunity to establish himself as a dragon of high social status. A male of truly prodigious strength and unique standing, he had females throwing themselves at him left and right. However, he's withdrawn and introverted, shirking company for solitude. He prefers to watch events from afar, only coming forth to contribute in skirmishes or battles. Even then, after the fight is done, he retreats soundlessly to the shadows, claws soaked in blood. When interrupted or approached, he simply gets up and leaves the offending dragon; repeated infractions will eventually lead to him lashing out and attacking. He seems almost emotionless, and ever so cold, but in truth, he's just waiting to find somebody he can relate to.
