Sunstone Dragons are named after the orb on their tails, which resembles the gem of the same name. Their social structure resembles a lion pride, with one dominant male and several females banded together with their young. They prefer arid climates where they can blend in and dig for minerals and gemstones that they not only collect, but eat. The more gems they consume, the larger their tail stone grows. They are an aggressive breed; it is not uncommon to see two males battling for mates and territory.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Sun Devil the Ruthless is in fact ruthless in battle as well as in his comments. He is only tolerated because he has chosen to live in a cave at the base of the mountain instead of the main cave at the top. Sun Devil believes that Dragons' talents have been diluted. When there is a special dragon with no relatives breeding together, the talent is diluted and eventually lost. He believes in order to fix this, some controlled inbreeding must happen. In order to combat inherited illness, Sun Devil is taking three mates and plans to give his daughters to his sons, ensuring half-sibling breeding. His first mate is a moonstone known as Moon Flower the Beautiful, who he chose because of her beauty. His second mate, Neliea the Shy, was chosen as a favor to his first mate as well as her innate ability to preserve food. His third mate, Fellra the Dangerous was picked for her ferocity and her ability to protect young and hunt.
