Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It glows with some form of arcane energy.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Amber Magelet was frozen as a hatchling by a wizard who wanted an exotic familiar.  This wouldn't have been so bad—such partnerships have worked out well before—except the wizard had a tendency to treat Amber Magelet as part servant, part glorified parrot—able to do what she was told, and maybe even show some limited understanding, but certainly not up to his level of mental acuity.  One day, the wizard, having a greatly exaggerated idea of his own abilities, gathered a group of the greatest wizards in the kingdom to show off his skills.  The wizard needed no help to make a fool of himself, but Amber Magelet added to his humiliation by sending sarcastic mental comments to everyone in the room, including him.  She quickly found herself without a home, and wandered for a time before meeting the magi Elciar.  Amber Magelet now works at his magic shop, and while she has an unfortunate tendency to make snide remarks about customers, at least she only broadcasts them to Elciar.
