Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Its eyes glow brightly at night, and it enjoys attacking insects and small animals.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Tiger Black was intended as a house dragon for one of the members of the wizarding family Black. However, Tiger was to wild and playful, to cheery for the task as house dragon and secret weapon of one of the Black family. They tried to transfigure him into a cat to sell to some unsuspecting Muggle, but the plan backfired. Tiger now thinks he's a cat, but his body is still that of a black dragon hatchling. Since he is obviously too big to be a cat, he got the name Tiger.
