Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It likes to perch on the high branches of the taller trees and look longingly up at the sky.
And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.
Young dragons are relatively defenseless. Their scales don’t grow in until right before they mature, and they have almost no strength. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are usually left alone by their mother and begin to hunt and survive on their own.
Smalltree is a frozen male Canopy dragon of the Featherwing Weyr. He takes after his father, Talltree, in being easily startled and jumpy; he also has a tendency to worry too much. Of the hatchlings of the Weyr, he and Smalljungle, a frozen Vine hatchling, are the most likely to go to the adults if a game or adventure gets out of hand. He is one of the best fliers of the hatchings, using his speed and agility to fetch the grown-ups when he feels that his Weyrmates are endangering themselves.
