Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. You find it odd that the hatchling doesn’t move at all during the day, but at night its colors change and it is full of energy.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

It All Goes DownHill From Here, also known as DownHill, is the keeper of the cave. He watches everything that happens and writes it like a book in his memory, with not a single event fading away. A few have asked DownHill how he continues to be a hatchling, with no spell cast on him whatsoever. His reply is slow and steady, with a hint of melancholy floating around him. "I will not become an adult and never will. My work for life is to remember, and adults do not remember. They go forward and play with life, and that is not my purpose."

DownHill does not play with the other hatchlings, or even fly with the other Nocturne dragons at night. He sticks to the entrance of the cave, eyes forward, with almost no visitors that want to talk to him. Only his owner and one lone mint hatchling ever come to stay by him; no conversation ever starts between them and DownHill is fine with that.
