Dorsal Dragons are so named because they have large fins along their backs that can be raised and lowered at will. They use these fins to regulate body temperature; they raise them to cool off when they become overheated. The bright colors on the fins double as a means of attracting mates.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Slbpu's Butterscotch Fins is a purple dorsal dragon. He is very talkative and funny, and the hatchlings of his clan love to hear his entertaining jokes and watch him strut around in his comical gait, raising and lowering his deep, purple fins with each step. He is also quite romantic, owing mainly due to his valentine dragon ancestors, and many females adore him, though he is smart enough to tell the difference between true love and just admiration. Also, his body is unnaturally warm and cozy, since his interesting lineage includes red and magma dragons. Lastly, to top it all off, he has a unique, sweet, creamy butterscotch aroma, which makes him very popular among his clan's dragons, and especially, the females.
