Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

This little black hatchie had an unfortunate accident. He ran into a mysterious member of his cave—a frozen Rose hatchie. Now, the rose hatchie hates seeing others grow up. She fears that they will change forever. So after she witnessed the magic of freezing, she learned how to imitate it herself. This little boy was her first victim. Being a black, he has powerful magic in his blood, but is mentally too young to be aggressive or vengeful. Instead, he grew attached to the Rose. He is always near her, as if she's his mother.
