Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Its belly is bright red and it is most active in the evening.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Borealis is still young and hyper, so sometimes she gets in trouble.  But Tuttle, who was constantly being annoyed by her rambunctious antics, gave Borealis a job. Now she is the willing messenger of the clans, running around all day long delivering messages.  At night she is so tired she falls asleep standing up.  But she never complains, in fact she likes being helpful. It is now her choice to keep the job or not, but she decided right away that she doesn't want to stop.  Borealis is very fast, and as soon as her wings grew she took to the air.  She won't grow any older now physically, but she is always learning, and she is so intelligent that the elders say she could become matriarch of the clans some day.
