Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Traitorous Clod is small (or "smol") and because of her diminutive stature has been compared to crunchy foodstuffs, a cat, and a slice of pie. She's stubborn, obsessive, prone to temper tantrums, and arrogant, so she doesn't make a good first impression to anyone but the nicest of dragons. While the youngster is skillful at building useful things out of junk and understands concepts quickly, one of her most notable flaws is her social ineptness. She has an amazing ability to say the wrong things to her friends despite having good intentions. Still, she is very curious and has a constant desire to learn new things, including understanding people around her, so she is always trying to better herself.
