Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Vengeful is a typical example of the old adage that "brain beats brawn". The bigger (and clumsier) Virulent, her rather unfaithful mate, loves to challenge the rest of Kad's clan to mock battles, and had a decent winning record until Veng found out about his infidelity. Calculating and ruthless—willing to stick powder in Virr's nest, oil certain spots on the floor, and wear a hundred lucky clover charms—Veng always wins, but her revenge isn't sweet. Despite her perpetual victory at Virr's favorite activity, she can always see that smile on his ugly face. No number of amulets and talismans (bought at outrageous prices from that faker Clairvoyant) can wipe that grin away. They both know that at midnight he'll be sneaking out of his nest to meet that particular dragon again, driving Veng insane.
