When Water Dragons mature, they lose the ability to survive on land, entering the water permanently. They are adept swimmers and eat whatever fish are in the lake they live in. They tend to inhabit the same lake for their entire lives, although a few live in the ocean and swim all over the world.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Lapis Ocean Sky, happy and kind, hatched in a puddle outside the cave of Mentha Verdant's family.  She called to shy Mentha, her friendliness winning him over, and taught him to swim in the puddle she called home.  As they grew older, the hot weather started to dry her puddle.  Mentha organized his other friends, Dark Paris and Dark Rebellion to help carry Lapis to the nearest stream. Lapis and Dark Rebellion became very close friends from that time on, sharing their hopes and fears as girlfriends always do.  When they went west, flying over the wide valley with the beautiful lake, Lapis could see it was the perfect location for all their plans.  Exuberantly, she dove from Reb's back into the lake as soon as they flew over.  Reb landed on the shore, calling to her friend.  Lapis jumped and dived again in the water, laughing.  "Look around! Mountains caves for you and Paris, rich land for Mentha's garden, and this lake is perfect for me!  We have found our homes. Welcome to Verdant!"
