Dragons are creatures with nearly unlimited life spans. They can survive for long periods of time, and no one has found a dragon that has died of old age. Adolescence is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Once they hit adolescence, hatchlings change quickly, maturing to their full forms in only 2 years.
Dragons don’t communicate with each other verbally, but they will growl to scare off predators and frighten prey. Young dragons will emit an extremely high-pitched squeal when they are frightened. To communicate, they use telepathy with each other and to speak to other creatures.
Sunstone dragons are named after the orb on their tails, which resembles the gem of the same name. Their social structure resembles a lion pride, with one dominant male and several females banded together with their young. They prefer arid climates where they can blend in and dig for minerals and gemstones that they not only collect, but eat. The more gems they consume, the larger their tail stone grows. They are an aggressive breed; it is not uncommon to see two males battling for mates and territory.
Sol Orb once was the respected leader of a large dragon clan of Sunstone Dragons. However, this changed when his leadership was challenged by a much younger dragon. Sol Orb ultimately lost the fight and was thus completely cast out. While the loss of his clan was particularly hard on the proud Sol Orb, the injuries he'd received during the fight were even more grievous. So much so that he could barely walk and came very close to dying of starvation. However, he was discovered in time by Luna Orb who helped Sol Orb regain his strength by bringing him food and water. With Luna Orb's diligence, Sol Orb recovered from his injuries. Since then, Sol Orb has been indebted to Luna Orb, and despite his lingering limp, he now focuses his energy on being the leader of his new ragtag clan.
